“I still have so much to say and share. I’m grateful for each and every day that I get to make music. As long as there’s a corner of the world where people want to hear me, I’ll be there … singing my heart out.”
With more than 25 years of world record sales in excess of 25 million, Cyndi Lauper is a remarkable talent as a writer, singer, musician, director and actress. Combine that with her sense of style and over the edge creativity and substance, she’s an obvious choice as Swing’s ageless artist of the year—breaking the generation barrier with social justice and song.
What inspires her to stay on the cutting edge with her music and her life?
“I am always inspired by what I see every time when I step outside my door. The world is fi lled with fascinating people struggling and surviving and living their lives the best way they can. The more I see, the more I write down. For me, the words become my views of life and my poetry.” Her latest album, Bring Ya To The Brink, is a dance album with two very different levels of energy. “You can move to and enjoy on a surface level. But if you want more than that, there’s a lot to discover inside the lyrics. There are times when these songs get pretty deep.”
Of all her successes as a songwriter, which is her favorite song?
“I love all of my songs. But there’s something about ‘Raging Storm’ that tugs at my heart a little bit more. It looks at the way that we can all become preoccupied with the wrong things in life at one time or another. In the end, though, if we’re lucky, we find our way to the truth of life.”
The True Colors Tour began with a T-shirt to promote pride and respect. Cyndi envisioned a tour where she would get to laugh, sing and work with a community of musicians while helping others. The True Colors Tour has evolved into a platform for gay rights awareness and includes various artists such as The B-52s, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, the Indigo Girls, Joan Armatrading, Regina Spektor, Andy Bell, Tegan and Sara, Deborah Cox and The Cliks. The tour also attracted comedians Rosie O’Donnell and Wanda Sykes to nurture the humorous side of Cyndi.
